Sustainable valorisation of agri-food waste from open-air markets in Kampala, Uganda via standalone and integrated waste conversion technologies

Though the magnitude of organic-rich agri-food waste arisings from open-air markets in many sub-Saharan Africa cities such as Kampala, Uganda are largely unknown, predominant approaches to managing them, i.e., open burning and unsanitary landfilling, unsustainable, emitting greenhouse gases, represent an inefficient use their intrinsic compositional energy value. This study combined waste-to-energy (WtE) process modelling/simulation, material flow analysis life cycle assessment comparatively evaluate bioenergy production, value-added recycling opportunities associated environmental impacts characterised three major Kampala City under management scenarios: conventional standalone (anaerobic digestion, AD) integrated (hydrothermal carbonisation, HTC & anaerobic digestion; HTC-AD) technologies. Results reveal that estimated 14.1 kt (eq. 34.8 TJ) aggregated focus is disposed landfill annually. Intrinsic analyses evidence suitability for technology-based valorisation scenarios. Further, HTC-AD performed better than AD, marked by higher diversion input (91% vs 75% AD), recovery diversified fuels (hydrochar biogas) with efficiency (ηeff = 69% 45% minimal impacts. When benchmarked against both scenarios significantly reduce (∼96%) adverse responses most impact categories. These findings demonstrate feasibility addressing interlinked challenges pollution whilst promoting energy/value-added resource markets. critical timely support near-term decision-making on selecting appropriate decentralised WtE systems can realise economic, environmental, technical (operational strategic) goals city other similar contexts.
